How are Community Councillors elected?
Community Councillors are (in most cases) self-nominated volunteers that hold post for a maximum of 5 years at a time. In our Community Council we can have a maximum of 8 Councillors, with a required minimum of 4.
When 'elections' take place there is a period of application open to anyone interested in becoming a Member of the Community Council. When all the applications are reviewed, if there are between 4 and 8 applicants then there is automatic election; if more than 8 applicants then a postal vote is held across the Community Council area. As with any vote, when they are counted the 8 highest applicants will be elected as Community Councillors.
Some Community Councillors volunteer to be Office Bearers to hold the required Offices of Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. These Office Bearers usually have the opportunity to stand-down or be re-elected at the AGM. Office Bearers are elected by Community Council Members during the AGM.
All members of the Community Council are Volunteers - they can stand down at any time. Should numbers fall below the minimum required (4 for Stanley & District) then the Council would be stood-down until such time as new Members are elected into post.
The Community Council can co-opt individuals into specific roles for short-term projects as required. These individuals do not form part of the Community Council and cannot vote on CC issues.
