AGM and The restoration of Haigh Hall with Dr Sylvia Travers

Tuesday 24 February 2026
19:30 to 21:00

After our AGM we will hear from Dr Sylvia Travers, Head of Horticulture at Haigh Hall in Wigan, whose area of expertise is walled kitchen garden restoration and management.

Haigh Hall is the ancestral home of the Earl of Balcarres, and was sold to Wigan Corporation in 1947 who have longstanding plans to develop the Hall and its grounds into a nationally significant arts, culture and heritage destination. The horticultural vision is being managed by Dr Sylvia Travers who has worked extensively at RHS Bridgewater and Moor Hall in Aughton.

Following training at the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin Dr Travers began her career at the Lost Gardens of Heligan and then specialised in designing and operating kitchen gardens for chefs.

Haigh Hall has obtained a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to restore the Bothy Year and associated walled gardens and the aim is to develop a kitchen garden that will once again feed and sustain the estate.

This project is of course fairly local to us and I am sure that members will be interested to attend this talk and perhaps include the venue in their garden trips in the future.
