...just a few of the many men and women who served in the Salonika Campaign.

Hori Tribe

Hori Tribe

Hori Tribe (1877-1917) was an employee of The Royal Parks who served in Salonika before transferring to the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF) in June 1917.   
Hori was killed in action on 8 December 1917. He is laid to rest at the Jerusalem War Cemetery.

George Excell

George Excell

George Excell was from Gloucestershire and enlisted at the beginning of the war. He was wounded twice in France before transferring to Salonika where he died from illness. George is buried at Doiran Military Cemetery.

Micheal Margiotta

Micheal Margiotta

Micheal Margiotta (1888-1918) was a pre-war regular soldier who joined the 3rd Battalion, Middlesex Regiment in 1904 and, by 1916, was  Company Quartermaster Sergeant of 26th Divisional Cyclist Company.  He died of illness and is buried in Lembet Road Cemetery, Thessloniki. Charles Ussher Kilner

Charles Ussher Kilner

Charles Ussher Kilner (1883-1916) qualified as an architect before enlisting in 28/London Regiment (Artists’ Rifles). He served on the Western Front and in Salonika.

Magaret Rogers

Magaret Rogers

Staff Nurse Magaret Rogers was a nurse in the newly-formed New Zealand Army Nursing Service, enlisting in July 1915. She served in Egypt and joined a British transport ship bound for Salonika, Greece, to where the hospital was to be moved. After a few days at sea, and only a few hours from Salonika, the ship was hit by a torpedo. Magaret drowned. 
Margaret is buried at the Mikra British Cemetery at Kalamari.

Hubert Lewis

Hubert Lewis

Hubert Lewis (nickname 'Stokey Lewis')  was born in Wales and enlisted at the beginning of the war, which he survived despite seeing fierce action in Salonika. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery.
Hubert (Stokey) died in February 1977  at the age of 80 and is buried in Milford Haven Cemetery, Wales.
Because 'Stokey' was awarded a Victoria Cross, there is more information available about him than most other soldiers:

Samuel Jenkins

Samuel Jenkins

Samuel Jenkins enlisted in the 6th (Service Battalion), Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers on 1 September 1914 and arrived in Salonika in 1915.
