Salem's Aims and Objectives
SHP is a health organization set up to promote health, prevent major chronic diseases and level health inequality among Black Africans, primarily for French Speaking Community, of all ages and genders, through raising awareness, giving advice and information, educating people, campaigns such as: HIV testing, Sickle cell or breast and bowel cancer screening, substance misuse etc, advocacy and support. Series of activities appropriate for each health programme are coordinated by myself ( My background: full qualified overseas medical doctor). We work in partnership with other CoH organisations and we function with grants and sometimes with donations.
Some of activities completed apart from advice in drop in basis:
- Various public awareness events and meetings, workshops and trainings on various topics. Last event was funded by LGTPS programme (Newham Council).
- Some long term programmes achieved:
- Health Eating and Cooking project (Comic Relief)
- Older People Health Support Group
- Older People Leisure Club
- Older People Fitness Club
- Youth Forum for dancing, musical training and peer discussion
- HIV/AIDS through Tower Hamlet & Newham
- HIV/AIDS Prevention Programme (NHAPP)with former PCT
- After school Judo Club etc….
Unfortunately, currently due to lack of funding, we don’t have activities except the publication next week of the second edition of our Sickle Cell Awareness booklet in French (“How to live with Sickle Cell Disease?). We sometimes have some TV broadcasting sessions at a Community TV Channel (Olive TV, Sky 593) in partnership with UK-Congo Voice which owns the space.
