Pielarks is a small community folk choir that meets in North Kingston every Monday morning. We're a friendly and sociable bunch, and the meetings are informal and light-hearted, though we take our singing seriously!
Repertoire
We sing traditional folk songs in harmony – rousing shanties and maritime songs, romantic ballads, pastoral and drinking songs, wassails, and songs of toil and trouble. Occasionally, we rise to the challenge of singing songs not in English.
Activities
We sing at local street parties, fairs and festivals, and in singarounds at folk clubs and in pubs. We have sung at events at the Rose Theatre, at a Canbury Bandstand summer concert, at joint concerts with other choirs and joint events with local Morris sides, and in a local nursing home and a club for people with dementia and their carers. Sometimes, when we perform at more formal events, we dress up as nineteenth-century agricultural workers.
Membership
Although we're a small group, we sometimes need to recruit new singers. Do contact us if you're keen to join.
We are open to adults of all ages. There are no auditions, but you should have a sense of rhythm and be able to carry a tune. The ability to read music is not essential, but would be useful. What's important is that you love singing and enjoy folk music.
Access to a computer, printer and Internet connection is necessary, as music and sound files for all songs are shared online.
A membership fee of £60 per year (£5 per month, £15 per quarter) goes towards the hire of the venue and incidental costs.
Venue
Though we're a secular choir, we practise in St Luke's Church, Burton Road, Kingston upon Thames, KT2 6AB, which is a 10–15-minute walk from Kingston Station, and slightly less from the 65 and 371 bus stops. There is pay and display available in the street outside the church.
