The Ohlalalympics: William Penny Brookes and the French Connection’
Tuesday 21 October 2025
19:30 to 21:00
A talk by Catherine Beale, created to coincide with the 2024 Olympic Games being hosted by Paris. Beyond the obvious connection between Brookes and Coubertin, and the latter's visit to Much Wenlock, it considers Brookes's medical training in Paris and its influences on him, including while he was there, the revolution of 1830, and the French excavations at Olympia, his honeymoon being taken in France, the French origins of chivalry as observed by Brookes in his styling of the crowning of the winning tilter, the Wenlock pentathlon winner who also attended the Paris Olympics of 1924, and finally, some fun connections between the Wenlock Olympian Games and the Paris 2024 Olympics.
