Ferryman

PIEL Island ahoy!

Club member Steve Bird's long wait to step ashore on the little island of Piel at the edge of Morecambe Bay is finally over.
Steve, pictured with the Piel ferryman, only became aware of the island's existence a couple of years ago.

His hope of exploring the island and its ruined castle on a club trip last summer were scuppered when the ferry was cancelled because of choppy seas.
Steve and seven other Morecambe Camera Club members finally made the crossing on the latest all-day shoot which also took in nearby Furness Abbey. The island's 14th century castle was built by the Abbot of Furness to oversee local trade and to protect the abbey against Scottish raiders.
The thoroughly enjoyable day was organised and led by Pat Hamer.
