Merrow Horticultural Society

Annual Show Report 2018

After our amazingly hot summer we had no idea how many entries would be possible this year – we have all struggled with watering to even keep plants alive – let alone look good.

We had plenty of jams, jellies and chutneys……..but obviously less fruit/veg entries – no cucumbers at all …….. plus fruit, vegetable and children’s entries.  The judges told us it was the same at every show.

Saturday 8th September started well and people brought their entries throughout the early morning.  There was a punctual start to the judging at 11 am and the judges were as thorough as usual as they moved around the displays, awarding prizes and often writing comments or advice for the exhibitors.

The show opened to the public at 2.30pm – following some torrential rain in the area – and we had many visitors.  The raffle, plant/produce stall and refreshments all did well.  Congratulations to the winners and all who took part to make it such a good day.  You do not need to be a member to enter and details will be found on our website next year.

The awards were presented by our President Jennifer Bayley – who herself won the Dahlia Perpetual Challenge Cup!  Barbara Owen won four awards – one of which was the RHS Banksian medal. Awards also went to Sheila Carter, Alison Craze, Andrew Haslehurst, David Owen and Dorothy Seymour.  The Junior Challenge Cup was retained by Gemma Haslehurst.

The show closed at 4.30pm and we would like to thank all those who came. The Society holds regular meetings at St John’s Centre, Merrow and experts are invited to speak about various aspects of horticulture.  We also visit a local show garden in the summer.  Our next meeting is Tuesday 7thNovember when the subject is ‘The Day BBC Gardeners’ World filmed our subtropical garden’.  You will be most welcome to join us, visitors pay £3.
