At the Little Potting club we create many different types of crafts. We strive to keep them as natural as possible. Using many natural resources we gather locally.

We practice natural foraging as responsibily as possible. Where we take only what we need. Careful to not take from or disturb wildlife, so in this activity seen in the photos, so as not to encourage picking wildflowers. We created these with shop purchased flowers and wild foraged the grasses and leaves.

Lavender bags

Once the lavender shrub has finished flowering and the pollinators no longer use it for food we use the old flowers to make lavender bags.

Lavender was used in our history as a room freshener, perfume and placed underneath a pillow to aid a good nights sleep.

Clay tree spirits.

Using clay we created tree spirits to help protect the trees. We talked about how important trees are to the planets health and how they support wildlife. Recognising that trees provide food we learnt about nuts and fruit that trees produce. Trees also provide homes for many different species so we looked for wildlife printed on cards hidden in the park that taught us which species live in trees.

In addition to the clay tree spirits we used clay to create little people or fairies which helps to support imaginary play and creative development. We wild forage for the natural resources such as conker, beech and sycamore seeds/cases, leaves, twigs, small stones and much more. This all contributes to learning about tree identification that grow in our local environment through foraging for their leaves and seeds.

Clay is a versatile resource to use for natural crafts.

We use it often as we have experienced so many different activities with it.

Such as our animal print clay hangers. This was an activity that supported our RSPB bird watch.

Taking cress seeds home we created clay pots for them to grow in. Moulding faces in the pots so when the cress grows it appeared to be hair.

Bamboo canes are frequently used in the garden. To help protect our eyes, cane toppers are often used.

Using clay we created our own taking inspiration from nature.

Using leaves.

leaf flower

Autumn leaves provide a great natural resource for many activities. We have created buntings, leaf flowers, leaf crowns and ground art with autumn leaves.

Alongside leaves we use green willow often. This helps to place emphasies on seasonal changes as we use copice willow and fallen leaves during the autumn/winter periods.

collage leaf crowns

Using only the leaf and its stem to craft a crown.

This activity is 100% biodegradable.

Seasonal decorations

collage xmas

We all celebrate different seasonal celebrations and so the nature baubles held a special message inside. We wrote a wish on a rolled up piece of brown paper and placed in the bauble for someone special. A lovely gift for that special person. Some of us made even a wish for nature.

The Little Potting Club is lucky to have a beekeeper who attend regularly with their family. So we recieved a learning opportunity on Honey bee keeping.

We crafted a paw print capture. Our local Wood Mouse often visits to steal bird feed. So we crafted a paw print trap made from non toxic natural ink.
