After half a century, a major upgrade for this part of one of the earliest sections of the original M1.
The Motorway is now two to three times (at junctions) its original width. This is the junction with the A5 - The Roman Road, Watling Street. This can be done "easily and cheeply" in the countryside. The cost of improvements of this scale through built-up areas would be astronomic.
