A passenger crushed by a train at New Malden station was trying to hold the train door open to pick up his mobile phone, police have said. British Transport Police attended the station last week on Wednesday, August 8, following reports of a man on the tracks during rush hour.
A spokeswoman said: "It appears that the man had attempted to hold open the train doors after apparently trying to reach for an item on the tracks. He then stepped away but slipped between the platform and the train. The train began to move but stopped almost immediately."
