When the Salem Chapel was built in 1823, the entrance was reached immediately after passing through the main gates. There were two sections of burial ground – one either side of the Chapel – Section 1 to the right, and Section 2 to the left.
In 1857 the land behind the Chapel was purchased to provide room for a larger School and two more areas for burials – Section 3 to the far right and Section 4 immediately behind the Chapel. When the School was demolished in 1923, the land was given over to more plots – Section 5.
These section references are used to locate ancestors that are buried in the cemetery. We have placed large stones with painted numbers on to indicate which section is which.
At the far left of the cemetery is a long pathway which leads to some disused gates. This would have been the access pathway to the original Sunday school that was attached to the Chapel. There is a steep embankment running alongside the pathway, at the top of which is Section 5. (For photos of the embankment tidying, see the 'Great Wall of Chapel Walk' folder)
