At the start of the COVID-19 Lockdown in March 2020, two Chapel Street residents started clearing the neglected and overgrown cemetery. After 4 months they asked for more volunteers to help with their massive task. Constituted group 'Friends of Chapel Street Cemetery' was formed and in February 2023, in order to purchase the cemetery from the United Reform Church, an application to become a registered charity was successful.
After 5 years of effort, work is still ongoing to make the cemetery an open and welcoming space for the public to visit.
