Thomas was a pupil teacher at Chapel Steet Board School and eventually became the Principal of the Bradford Pupil Teachers’ Centre. He was appointed Headmaster for Wellington Road School in 1910.
He gave a lifetime’s service to Eccleshill Congregational Church and was a noted historian of Congregationalism, co-writing a number of books on the subject.
Whilst at Wellington Road School, he introduced local outings – an innovation at the time – to Buck Wood, Idle Moor, Bolling Hall, Cartwright Hall, Esholt Sewage Works and Birkshall Gas Works to name but a few.
He died in 1945 aged 80, at his home in Tunwell Mount after living there his whole life. His wife, daughter and three sons had also been teachers.He
A former pupil said “If I had to vote for the best loved person in Eccleshill, it would be Thomas Whitehead.”
