Samuel Hammond

Samual passed away at the age of 37.  He was born in 1862 in Eccleshill to Thomas and Mary Hammond.  In 1894 he married Mary Ellen nee King, a school teacher and daughter of Abraham Tabitha nee Craven.  They had 2 children in the short time that they were married – Joseph King Hammond (1896-1968) and Agnes Hammond (1897-1981).

Joseph was often ill during his childhood, but his mother made sure he did not miss out of his education and he gained a B.Bc at Leeds University and became a teacher.  He did his ‘bit’ during WW1 by working with munitions, but this work impaired his health and after the war was only able to take up part-time work.  Later as his health improved, he was able to go back into teaching.  He was a local historian and although he never got to write a book on the history of Eccleshill he did manage to compile all his research into a manuscript “A History of Eccleshill (1083-1899)”.  A copy can be found in the Eccleshill library and it gives a good insight into Eccleshill life through the centuries.

His sister Agnes was also a teacher and lived until the age of 84.  All the family are buried together in section 1 of Chapel Street Cemetery.
