Joseph Waterhouse

In Section 2 of the cemetery is a lovely granite headstone, slightly leaning to one side but perfectly safe. This was erected by Ann Mowat nee Waterhouse in memory of her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Waterhouse and family.

Joseph Waterhouse was born in Eccleshill in 1801 to David and Hannah nee Bakes. Joseph's first wife was Mary nee Firth whom he married on the 30th April 1826 at St Peter's Church, Bradford (now Bradford Cathedral). They had four children – David, James, Ann and Thomas.

David was born in 1827 but died at the age of 23 in 1850.  James was born in 1828 and died a bachelor in 1889 – he is buried in St Luke's Church graveyard.  Ann was born in 1830 but died at the age of 17 in 1847. Thomas was born in 1835 and married Susannah Crossley.  He died in 1914 and his family grave is in Section 4 (plot L27) of the cemetery.

Mary passed away in September 1837 and is buried in a separate grave in Section 2 (plot S1)

Joseph married his second wife Elizabeth nee Skirrow in January 1842 but he sadly passed away in December 1850 aged 49, leaving Elizabeth with Thomas from his first marriage and three other young children to care for. They were: Walter born in 1844 (died 1883), Ann born in 1850, and Joseph born in 1851 (died 1862, aged 11).  Daughter Ann married William Mowat in July 1879. They had one son and a daughter Grace, who died in infancy and is buried with her grandparents.

Elizabeth passed away in April 1887 aged 76 and was buried in the family grave.

Son James, and daughter Ann Mowat are the only two not buried in Chapel Street Cemetery.
