Joseph was born in 1896 the son of Samuel Hammond and Mary Ellen nee King.
Joseph was often ill during his childhood, but his mother made sure he did not miss out of his education and he eventually gained a B.Bc at Leeds University and became a teacher. During WW1 he worked with munitions, but this work impaired his health and after the war he was only able to take up part-time work. Later, as his health improved, he was able to go back into teaching. He also became a local historian and although he never got to write a book on the history of Eccleshill he did manage to compile all his research into a manuscript “A History of Eccleshill (1083-1899)”. A copy can be found in the Eccleshill library and it gives a good insight into Eccleshill life through the centuries.
He died in 1968 and is buried with his family in section 1 of Chapel Street Cemetery.
