Joseph Gill

Joseph was born in 1831 to Christopher and Effeby nee Hopwood of Esholt.  For many years, Christopher had been the publican of the Commercial Inn in Esholt.

In 1853 Joseph married Sarah Ann Thornton, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Thornton, a tiler of Chapel Street, Eccleshill. When they were first married, they lived in Garnett Street, Bradford and Joseph worked as a railway porter.  By 1871, Joseph had now become the publican of the Commercial Inn in Esholt, living there with Sarah Ann and two of their children (seven had already passed away) but another daughter sadly passed away that same year.  In 1878, Sarah Ann herself died at the age of 51.

In 1879, Joseph married Emma Cawthra and they continued living in the pub until his death in 1904 at the age of 73.  His last remaining son, Joseph jnr passed away in 1885.

Joseph, his first wife Sarah Ann and their nine children are buried in adjacent plots in the cemetery.
