John Barraclough was born in Eccleshill in 1815 to Henry and Mary nee Hodgson. He married Ann Illingworth of Pudsey in 1838 and the couple settled in West Royd Hill, Pudsey where they raised their three children – Joseph, Samuel Hodgson and Mary*. The family returned to live in Eccleshill in the early 1860’s but John passed away in 1869 at the age of 53. His wife Ann (known as Nancy), lived until the age of 63, passing away in 1878.
Eldest son, Joseph, married Mary Robinson in 1858 and they lived in Stonehall, Eccleshill, where they raised a family. Sadly, Mary passed away in 1872 at the age of 35 and is buried in the Barraclough family grave. In the same year, Joseph married Elizabeth Halliday nee Sherwood and they continued to live in Eccleshill, adding two more children to the family. Their daughter Mary Hannah passed away in 1896 at the age of 20 and was also laid to rest in the Barraclough family grave. Joseph and Elizabeth moved to live in Leeds and when Joseph died in 1908, he was buried in Leeds.
Samuel Hodgson also married in 1872 to Hannah nee Holroyd and they lived for a time in Eccleshill, before moving to Bingley in the late 1890’s. Samuel passed away in 1902, aged 60 and Hannah in 1912 aged 61. Both were brought back to Eccleshill to be laid to rest in the Barraclough family grave.
