George and two of his three wives are buried in the same grave in section 3.
George was born in 1823 in Stanningley, the son of George and Elizabeth nee Roberts. George jnr was a woollen overlocker and moved to Eccleshill in the 1850’s with first wife Sarah (nee Lawson) whom he married in 1844. They had 8 children, but only 3 survived.
After Sarah’s death, George married Maria (nee Roberts) in 1863. They were married for 20 years. Following Maria’s death in 1884, George then married Martha (nee Wilson) in the same year. Martha outlived George by 18 years, George passing away in 1896 and Martha in 1914.
Esther, the only daughter of George and Sarah, married Joseph Pitts of Eccleshill and both are buried in section 4. Eldest son George Edward is buried in Norman Lane Cemetery, and youngest son William Henry is buried in section 3 of Chapel Street Cemetery.
