Locomotive L11 & Epping Signal Cabin

Situated alongside live running Central Line trains on the approach to Epping station is this unique LONDON TRANSPORT signal cabin. It is the only cabin on the entire Underground network in preservation and open to the public.
The cabin was built to the standard London Transport type design and started signalling trains on 25th September 1949. It replaced the original mechanical signal box built by the Great Eastern Railway on Platform 2 back in the days when steam trains ran to Epping and beyond. Looking from Platform 1 you can still see traces of where the signal cables and point rodding came out under Platform 2. See our Signal Cabin page for details.
In addition to the signal cabin, Epping Museum is also home to another unique exhibit - a pre-1938 built locomotive. After being a few different shades of white, red (and rust!), it was painted the bright yellow you see today in keeping with London Underground’s standard livery for engineering trains. Getting to Epping Museum is easy! Catch a Central Line train to Epping station (zone 6) and it’s the last stop on the line. If coming by bus, use one of the many local buses that serve Epping Underground station. Arriving by car is easy too with the nearby M25 J27 or M11 J6 and a large NCP car park at Epping station. There is no admission charge to visit Epping museum - it’s totally FREE, although donations are greatly appreciated. We are open every Saturday until the end of October from 10am until 4:30pm.
