The Wildings in Harmer Green Lane was home to artists George Soper and his daughters, Eva and Eileen.
From the 1950s, Eva and Eileen were enthralled by the wildlife at Wildings. They encouraged mice and birds to visit, as well as badgers, foxes and muntjac deer. Unfortunately, the house became rather dilapidated during the sisters' lives and, in 1990, amid plans to upgrade the house, both sisters died.
The house and garden at Wildings was left to the RSPB as a nature sanctuary. They sold the house in 1992, declaring that, although in private hands, it would be a sanctuary forever.
In 2023, the future of the house at Wildings is in the balance (view the news item).
The Soper Collection is now housed in Whitby. Art by George Soper, Eva and Eileen.
