As part of research into her dissertation, Bailey looked at the way that black women were represented in the yearbooks of medical students in the south of the United States in the early 1900s. She found very negative depictions of black women in these journals such as “images and representations of black women as unintelligent and unattractive, portraying black women as fat, and a lot of caricatures exaggerating black women's features.”
