About Chanctonbury Community Land Trust

What is a Community Land Trust?

  • Community Land Trusts – or CLTs – give ordinary people the means to steward land for local wellbeing
  • CLTs are organised around a location, and anyone who lives or works there can join and participate, democratically
  • CLTs prioritise the interests of the local community
  • Securing green prosperity
  • Attracting investment & nurturing business development
  • Creating & curating sustainable quality places for local people to live in
  • Enhancing the skill base

There are more than 550 CLTs in England & Wales. Many CLTs are focused upon affordable housing but CLTs can also be used to safeguard important community assets like the local village pub or areas of common land. For more information about CLTs visit Community Land Trust Network

Chanctonbury Community Land Trust (CCLT) is dedicated to helping to meet sustainability goals for residents of the Parishes of Thakeham; Ashington; Shipley; Storrington; Washington & West Chiltington, located in the Horsham district of West Sussex.

CCLT has only recently been incorporated but we have a big desire to make a meaningful difference in our local communities.

CCLT was set up in August 2024 to be a voice for our local area and to empower our communities to create sustainable social, economic and environmental gains.

We chose the name Chanctonbury because the iconic Chanctonbury Ring stands proudly above our area. Chanctonbury Ring is a prehistoric hill fort atop Chanctonbury Hill on the South Downs, on the border of the Parish of Washington.  A ridgeway, now part of the South Downs Way, runs along the hill. It forms part of an ensemble of associated historical features created over a span of more than 2,000 years, including round barrows dating from the Bronze Age to the Saxon periods and dykes dating from the Iron Age and Roman periods. We hope that CCLT will also have an enduring impact on this beautiful area of rural West Sussex.

CCLT is run by a Board of Management, drawn from different Parishes covered by the Trust's operating area, all of whom are volunteers elected to the Board by the Trust's Members.

CCLT welcomes expressions of interest from Members to become a Board Member, please contact the Secretary to discuss your interest and outline the skills you can offer CCLT to further the interests of all Members.

CCLT is registered with the Financial Conduct Authority, under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014 as a Community Benefit Society (registration Number 9391).

CCLT is an independent non-profit organisation owned by its Shareholding Members, that works for the benefit of our communities in developing and managing projects such as:

  • Provision of affordable homes
  • Provision of flexible facilities to aid Start-up and Small businesses owned by residents in our communities
  • Facilities such as community shops/post offices
  • Woodland and nature reserves
