The Challenge

Zac (not his real name) is a 41-year-old British citizen of Somali origin, living in social housing in Brent. Although he has made great efforts to learn English, he had no formal lessons, relying on friends, charities, and council staff for support. Zac also lacked digital skills, preventing him from making online claims or accessing online services independently.

In July 2021, Zac lost his zero-hour contract job with Royal Mail, a situation worsened by COVID-19. This led to:

  • Accumulating rent arrears

  • Inability to pay bills and daily necessities

  • Receipt of possession notice from his landlord

The financial strain impacted Zac’s mental health, causing prolonged low moods and depression.

“I was stressed and worried about losing my home and not being able to manage daily life.”

Our Approach

Zac was referred to BHCAC by Brent Hubs at Willesden Green Library. A BHCAC Advisor carried out a holistic assessment, reviewing Zac’s health, welfare, and personal development needs, and created a tailored action plan.

Support included:

  • Guidance on rights and entitlements

  • Assistance to make claims for:

    • Universal Credit

    • Resident Support Fund

    • Council Tax Support

  • Referrals and enrolment in educational programs:

    • Smart Phone Skills Course

    • ESOL and digital courses via Brent Start

  • Application for emergency food parcels from Sufra Food Bank

  • Creation of an email account for Zac to communicate independently

The Outcome

As a result of BHCAC’s support, Zac received:

  • Universal Credit: £489 for rent, £212 per month for living costs

  • Resident Support Fund: £2,745.55 (£1,844.85 for rent arrears, £900.70 for food, utilities, and winter clothing)

  • Council Tax Support: £19.49 per week

  • Six emergency food parcels from Sufra Food Bank

  • Successful completion of Digital Technology Course

  • Access to an email account for communication

“Thanks to BHCAC, I now have the financial help I need and the confidence to manage my life independently.”

The Impact

Zac’s outcomes have been transformative:

  • Financial security: able to pay rent, bills, and daily expenses

  • Reduced stress and anxiety, supporting better mental health

  • Increased independence and digital skills

  • Improved knowledge of rights and entitlements

  • Greater access to education and specialist services

Through the Smart Phone Skills Course and ESOL classes, Zac continues to build confidence and skills that will help him take control of his digital life and access council and voluntary sector services independently.

Zac has consistently expressed his gratitude for BHCAC’s support, acknowledging the life-changing impact of the advice and guidance he received.
