The Bedford Modern Singers is a community choir who's members consists of parents, friends, staff and former pupils of Bedford Modern School. The choir was formerly known as the Modernians and has been running for more than 25 years. The choir performs a mixed repertoire of many different genres, such as classical, folk, show tunes and more popular songs. The choir takes part each year in the Bedfordshire Festival of Music, Speech and Drama as well as concerts at Christmas and Summer.
The choir is led by Alex Mnatzaganian. Alex has been arranging and composing for bands and choirs since his school days, after an early introduction to singing and organ playing at his village church in Wiltshire. “Mr Miller heard my sister and me singing while we were waiting outside a shop for our mum. ‘I’m having these two for choir,’ he said when she came out with the bread. And that was that!”
As an engineering student in London, Alex discovered a particular love for a cappella gospel while continuing to be involved in church music. Later, he left engineering for church ministry, leading a specialist Arts, Media and Sports team in South East London, and writing, arranging, and directing music for choirs at events in venues such as Alexandra Palace and Wembley Arena.
Alex enjoys playing and teaching a wide range of instruments and works on the belief that everyone has an inner musician just waiting to be released!
If you are someone who has current or former links with the school and would be interested in joining the choir, you would be very welcome to join us in our rehearsals in the Bedford Modern School Music Department on Wednesdsay evenings from 7:30 to 9pm. No previous experience is necessary and you don't have to be able to read music. The informal atmosphere provides the perfect opportunity to meet friends old and new and rehearse with a view to performing on a stage in due course!
