Listen to the track:
Steer Point Line
Another song about the old railway line. Similar in concept to "Where the line meets the tide" but sung in a very different style. Anyway I am quite partial to railways so no apologies :)
Verse 1
You can trace it now in pieces,
Path and bank and broken way,
Out from Plymouth through the outskirts
Where the old rails used to sway,
Billacombe and Elburton Cross,
Names the evening still can keep,
Like a train half lost in twilight,
Rolling softly through my sleep.
Chorus
Steer Point, Steer Point,
Down the line we’d go,
Past Billacombe and Brixton Road,
Where the evening waters glow,
Steer Point, Steer Point,
Still I hear that cry,
Rail to river, smoke to tide,
Under the South Hams sky.
Verse 2
Some went on by boat from Steer Point,
Some stayed on the train awhile,
Through the hush beyond the water
Up to Yealmpton’s quiet mile,
Now some track is gone to bramble,
Some is footpath, lane or grass,
But the old names still shine through it
Every time I wander past.
Chorus
Steer Point, Steer Point,
Down the line we’d go,
Past Billacombe and Brixton Road,
Where the evening waters glow,
Steer Point, Steer Point,
Still I hear that cry,
Rail to river, smoke to tide,
Under the South Hams sky.
Bridge
Not a grand line, not a fast one,
Just a little branch away,
From the city to the stillness
At the falling of the day.
Final Chorus
Steer Point, Steer Point,
Down the line we’d go,
Past Billacombe and Brixton Road,
Where the evening waters glow,
Steer Point, Steer Point,
Still I hear that cry,
Rail to river, smoke to tide,
Under the South Hams sky.
