Sam's Island

Sam's Island

Classic dub reggae, inspired by the story of Sam Wakeham and the Mewstone.

“If any gentleman what likes a wark, he can wark to the shoar at Wembury, and if they holds up there white pockethanchecuffs for a signal, an ile cum off in me bote and fetch them to the island for two pence appease”. He might have lived out his days on that rocky island, if it weren’t for a sharp-eyed revenue man. Caught with contraband, he was forced to leave the Mewstone behind.

Watch the rocks, slick with mist.

Wait for the tide, I’ll fetch ‘ee over.

Seen the white cloth, I’ll come.

Rabbits for company, most days.

Steps carved in stone, up to the sky.

Smugglers passing, keep it quiet.

Lantern at night, storms rolling in.

Best mind the Manor, always watching.

Hidden goods under the old turf.

Caught at last, island left lonely.

A penny for the crossing, mind the swell.

A penny for the crossing, mind the swell.

A penny for the crossing, mind the swell.

A penny for the crossing, mind the swell.
