Rose Villa
Rose Villa is based on a remarkable true story from Wembury in 1951.
Leonard James Paltridge was a Royal Navy lieutenant and former schoolmaster who lived at Rose Villa, Knighton, with his wife Marion. By every account, theirs was a happy and devoted marriage. Marion later said they had never had a serious quarrel and that there was no reason at all for her husband to wish her harm.
Yet during the night of 24 November 1951, Leonard attacked Marion while apparently walking in his sleep. She awoke with pressure on her throat and later found herself injured, with blood on the pillow. Leonard came to his senses in horror, with no memory of what he had done. He telephoned the police himself and told them that he had awakened with his hands around his wife’s throat.
The case came before Exeter Assizes in February 1952. Leonard was charged with attempting to murder Marion and with causing grievous bodily harm. His defence was not insanity, but somnambulism: the argument that he had been asleep, acting without awareness or conscious intention.
A consultant psychiatrist told the court that a sleepwalker could perform disconnected actions while still trapped within a dream, without understanding their meaning or forming a deliberate purpose. Marion stood by her husband throughout the case and insisted that there had been no anger, threat or hidden trouble in their marriage.
The jury took only ten minutes to find Leonard not guilty.
The song tells the story of that night, the horror of waking to discover what had happened, Marion’s loyalty, and the unsettling question at the heart of the trial: can someone be held responsible for a terrible act committed while still asleep?
[Verse 1]
At Rose Villa, late one November night
Leonard and Marion turned out the light
No angry words and no reason for fear
Just two people sleeping with winter drawn near
She woke with a pressure, a hand at her throat
He woke in terror, unable to cope
Blood on the pillow, an axe by the bed
And no recollection of what he had said
[Chorus]
He woke with the darkness still gripping his mind
No reason before him, no memory behind
She looked in his eyes and saw only fright
A man lost in dreaming, awake in the night
At Rose Villa, beneath the cold sky
They knew what had happened, but never knew why
[Verse 2]
He called for the police and waited below
“I woke with my hands there, that’s all that I know”
They carried her out through the wind and the rain
While he searched his mind for a reason in vain
She said, “There was nothing, no anger, no blame
The man that I married would not be the same”
No quarrel between them, no hatred concealed
Just wounds in the morning and nothing revealed
[Chorus]
He woke with the darkness still gripping his mind
No reason before him, no memory behind
She looked in his eyes and saw only fright
A man lost in dreaming, awake in the night
At Rose Villa, beneath the cold sky
They knew what had happened, but never knew why
[Bridge]
At Exeter Assizes the question was clear
Was he acting with purpose, or trapped by his fear?
The doctor said sleep could take hold of the brain
And carry a dreamer through terror and pain
Ten minutes passed and the verdict was read
No conscious intention, no murder intended
She rose from her chair and stood close by his side
Then husband and wife left the courtroom outside
[Final Chorus]
He woke with the darkness still gripping his mind
No reason before him, no memory behind
She looked in his eyes and saw only fright
A man lost in dreaming, awake in the night
At Rose Villa, beneath the cold sky
They lived with the question of how and of why
[Outro]
The village fell silent, the years travelled on
But the night at Rose Villa was never quite gone
