đ” Peter the History Guy
Peter Lugar — the history guy of Wembury . Peter kept many books and memories which were donated to the Local History Society when he passed away. It’s part tribute, part storytelling, and part local anthem.
Verse 1
Down by the Yealm where the tide knows names
Lived a man who knew footpaths and old place names
From ferry slip to the headland’s sweep
He held the stories the hedgerows keep
Chorus
Peter the history guy
With a quiet step and a searching eye
He caught the past before it slipped from view
So Wembury’s story would carry through
Verse 2
He’d sailed with the Navy, crossed oceans wide
Served in the choirs with candles and pride
But the bracken and salt were where he belonged
In a village whose voice he kept clear and strong
Chorus
Peter the history guy
With a steady old grin and a sharp clear eye
He knew the fields and who worked where
And the names that time won’t easily spare
Bridge
He’d say don’t let it vanish in tourist gloss
There’s truth in this soil and weight in the loss
And he told it all not for gain or show
But to mark the roads where the old ones go
Verse 3
Now he's gone but his work remains
Seven thousand pictures and place-bound names
He gave it all to the village he loved
So Wembury’s memory won’t gather dust
Peter the history guy
Telling Wembury’s truth not letting it die
He gave us the gift of remembering why
The land still speaks when the swallows fly
