BRILLIANT METEOR SEEN OVER WEMBURY

Residents of Wembury and visitors spending the Easter holiday at the Warren were treated on Sunday evening to a remarkable sight. Shortly after nine o’clock, a streak of flame was observed traversing the heavens in a southerly direction, passing above the Mewstone and out to sea. The brilliance of the object was such that it drew exclamations from those upon the cliff walks, and some aver that a soft glow remained for several moments after the body had vanished from view. The meteor was also seen from Plymouth Hoe and from points along the Yealm estuary, and in each case the phenomenon was described as entirely without sound. While some speculated that the light might be from an aeroplane, the absence of any engine noise and the swiftness of the transit pointed to its celestial origin. No fragments or signs of impact have been reported, and it is believed the body disintegrated high in the atmosphere.

Verse 1
Easter night nineteen twenty-five
A phantom drifted half-alive
From starless gulfs where shadows churn
It fell along its fated turn

Verse 2
Through midnight air it cut the sky
Past Wembury cliffs the Mewstone’s eye
A comet’s scream without a sound
Its ghostlight kissed the waiting ground

Chorus
From the deep unknown to the ocean’s rim
In Easter’s fire the night grew dim
No voice was heard only starlight’s cry
Watching the wanderer burn and die

Verse 3
The void closed in the trail decayed
The watchers stared the moment stayed
From Plymouth Hoe to Yealm’s dark tide
They saw the angel fall and hide

Verse 4
From worlds unseen it came alone
No crest no flag no mortal home
A single spark in the darkened dome
Lost in the waves far from its home

Chorus
From the deep unknown to the ocean’s rim
In Easter’s fire the night grew dim
No voice was heard only starlight’s cry
Watching the wanderer burn and die

Outro
The fire is gone the memory’s thin
Lost to the tide and the world it’s in
But this song still burns in the midnight air
Telling of light that was once out there
