On This Day in Wembury

1 December 1952 — Wembury Beat the League Leaders

The Western Morning News reported a notable upset in local football: Wembury defeated Borringdon Athletic 2–1, handing the Premier Division leaders their first loss of the season.

Wembury struck first when C. Spencer set up Roach with a fierce drive that left the keeper no chance. Although Borringdon equalised through Harris, Wembury regained the lead before half-time after Roach fumbled a shot from Congdon, allowing Spencer to pounce and score. Despite heavy second-half pressure from Borringdon, Wembury’s defence held firm, with Hopper outstanding at centre-half and Congdon supplying chances from the wing.

This match is a reminder of Wembury’s long footballing tradition. The village club, known later as Wembury United, played in red and white stripes and remained active until around the early 2000s, competing in the Plymouth & District leagues.
