On this day in Wembury — 10 August 1893
The Western Morning News reported the success of Wembury’s first annual athletic sports, held that week on Bank Holiday Monday in a field near Knighton. Despite a foggy and rainy start, the skies cleared by afternoon, bringing fine weather and a large crowd of around 1,500 people — an impressive turnout for a small coastal parish.
The event featured a full programme of flat races, bicycle races, and even a comic song competition, with keen competition in every category. The Plymstock Band played lively selections throughout the day, adding to the festive atmosphere.
The sports were well organised under the leadership of Mr. Cory of Langdon Court, who served as president, with Rev. C. Burgess and Captain James as vice-presidents, and Mr. R. P. Burgess acting as starter. Prize-winners included Colman, Andrews, Newman, Williams, Cleary, Lister, and Mamford — all familiar local names in the late-Victorian parish.
The afternoon closed with games and light-hearted entertainment, marking the start of what would become a popular annual tradition for Wembury villagers and neighbouring hamlets.
