On this day in Wembury, 8 August 1994

The Western Evening Herald devoted half a page to the forthcoming St Werburgh’s Flower Festival, one of Wembury’s most cherished summer traditions. Running from Thursday 11 August to Saturday 13 August, with a special “Songs of Praise” service on Sunday the 14th, the festival invited residents and visitors to enjoy floral displays throughout the church, refreshments in the parish rooms and a full programme of music.

The feature captured the atmosphere of a village gearing up for a major community event. Local businesses placed supportive adverts around the announcement, from garages and florists to village pubs such as The Mussel Inn and The Eddystone Inn at Heybrook Bay. Funeral directors, estate agents, post offices and small workshops all took space, reflecting the strong local network that surrounded the church festival each year.

A photograph in the centre showed volunteers at work arranging flowers in St Werburgh’s, highlighting the hands on nature of the event. The festival was more than decoration, it was a moment when the village came together, showcasing local skill, hospitality and affection for the historic church at the heart of Wembury.
