On This Day in Wembury — July 30, 1879

The Yealm was alive with colour and cheering for the eighth annual regatta shared by Wembury, Newton Ferrers, Yealmpton and Revelstoke.
The weather was fine and a large crowd gathered along the banks while the committee vessel, moored off Wembury Point, flew bright bunting.
Boats of every size competed in races around the Mewstone and back, with the band of the South Devon Militia playing on shore.
The lifeboat from Yealm was launched and the crew gave demonstrations to the delight of the spectators.
Among the winners were the boats Escape, Eagle, and Dewdrop, with the Pride of the Yealm also taking honours.
It was a day of lively contests, music and community spirit that turned the Yealm into a festival of sails.
