On this day in Wembury
24 June 1989

The Western Evening Herald carried an advert for the Wembury Carnival, held on the twenty fourth of June. It announced that the fete would open at one in the afternoon on the Recreation Field at Barton Close, with stalls, games, and a grand draw.

Carnival day was one of the biggest fixtures in the village year at that time, drawing families from across Wembury, Down Thomas, and Heybrook Bay. The Recreation Field was the natural hub for these events, with school pupils, local clubs, stallholders, and volunteers all playing their part. The advert itself is brief, but it hints at a much larger scene, one where the village came together to raise funds for community groups, enjoy summer weather, and keep long standing traditions alive. For many residents it was a highlight of the late nineteen eighties, a reminder of how vibrant and well supported Wembury community events were.
