On this day in Wembury — 6 June 1939
A charming Western Morning News photograph from June 1939 captures a wedding at St Werburgh’s Church, only months before the outbreak of the Second World War. The report shows Mr G R Knightley of West Alvington and Miss M E Gubb of Wembury standing beneath the Norman arch of the church porch, both smiling proudly as newlyweds. Miss Gubb carried a large cascading bouquet, and the couple look every inch the classic pre war wedding pair.

The picture reflects the long standing tradition of local families choosing St Werburgh’s for their weddings, drawn by the beauty of the building, its historic porch and its setting above Wembury Bay. Even in 1939, with Europe on edge, village life continued to mark its milestones with joy, community and ceremony.
