4 May 1942 — Wembury Priest Appointed for the Duration of the War
During the Second World War, the Western Morning News reported that the Reverend Kenneth Tagg of Saltash was licensed by the Bishop of Plymouth as priest-in-charge of Wembury Church “for the duration of the war.” This temporary wartime appointment reflected a new diocesan practice allowing clergy to take parishes on a trial basis, giving both priest and parish a chance to test the fit during uncertain times.
At the same service, the Bishop conducted a confirmation and spoke on the text from St John 13:35: “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” He reminded the congregation that love was more important than orthodoxy, zeal, or organisation, and that the purpose of confirmation was to help people face the “insufficiency of today” with spiritual strength.
