On this day in Wembury — 9 April 1998
The Western Evening Herald celebrated the success of Wembury Women’s Institute, whose home produce sale had raised an impressive £830 for the Primrose Appeal’s Breast Cancer Support Unit at Derriford Hospital. The event, held in true WI fashion with cakes, preserves and local produce, was hailed as a great success by the chair of the appeal, the Hon. Mrs George Lopes, who opened the sale and praised the community’s generosity.

Local businesses and organisations from across the parish had rallied in support. Wembury Mini-Stores, Langdon Court Hotel, the post offices at Wembury and Down Thomas, and even the residents themselves all contributed prizes, cakes and raffle items. Neighbouring Women’s Institutes from Brixton, Yealmpton, Plympton St Maurice and Sir Joshua Reynolds also joined in, while competitions and a large raffle helped swell the total.

The sale captured the cooperative spirit that defines Wembury life — small groups pulling together to achieve something larger. What began as a table of jams and cakes in aid of a local hospital became a village-wide expression of care and community, proving that the strength of Wembury lies as much in its people as in its setting by the sea.
