On this day in Wembury — 1 April 1947
Wembury villagers learned that their much-loved Monday night kinema had come to an end. For six years, weekly film shows had been held in a dilapidated First World War hut, providing both entertainment and a source of funds for a new village hall. The events had already raised £900, but now the owner of the projector needed it back, leaving the committee appealing for the loan or gift of another machine.
Despite this setback, the Village Hall Committee remained determined. In nine years they had raised £2,200 towards their goal and were hoping for a £1,000 grant from the Carnegie Trust to complete the project. Their efforts included twice-weekly whist drives, dances, and other social events. The report noted that their dance band was no longer available, and that a radiogram was awaiting repair so dancing could resume. Meanwhile, a flourishing youth club continued to meet every Thursday, keeping village life vibrant in post-war years when entertainment and community spirit were often homemade but deeply valued.
