On This Day in Wembury — March 31, 1951

The illustrated weekly Sphere featured the Royal Naval Gunnery Range at Wembury, showing officers and ratings at work on the slopes of the point between the Yealm and Plymouth Sound.
The article explained how the control position there trained officers in directing fire and gave naval gunners their first live firing experience, with refresher and promotion courses also held for specialist grades.
It noted that the Wembury range had grown from the wartime anti-aircraft station that once defended Plymouth, and now played a key part in teaching the new radar-based techniques of fire control.
Three photographs accompanied the piece, showing Wembury’s post-war role in shaping modern naval gunnery.
