On this day in Wembury — 6 February 1908

The Naval and Military Record and Royal Dockyards Gazette reported the promotion of Chief Boatswain E. Jackman, who was born in Wembury, Devon, to the rank of Lieutenant. He had joined HMS Impregnable as a boy, second class, in February 1869, and later trained on HMS Ganges at Falmouth. After about thirty-nine years of service, he received his promotion while still serving on the same ship, which by that time had been renamed HMS Tenedos III and formed part of the mechanical training establishment at Chatham.

The notice reflects Wembury’s long tradition of naval service, with many local men entering the Royal Navy through Devonport’s training ships.
