On this day in Wembury — 26 January 1989

At the January meeting of the Wembury Women’s Institute, president Mrs. Barbara Triplett welcomed four new members, marking a bright start to the year. The guest speaker, Mrs. Val Olliver, gave an engaging talk about the work of St. Luke’s Hospice, and was warmly thanked by Mrs. Christine Foxhall.

Mesdames Han, Williams, and Richardson served refreshments, while Mrs. Ruth Wood won the competition for the best home-made sweets, which were later donated to the hospice.

The meeting reflected the WI’s enduring community spirit in the late 1980s, blending friendship, charity, and local involvement that continued to characterise Wembury’s village life.
