On this day in Wembury — 25 January 1997
The Western Evening Herald reported on a busy start to the year for Wembury’s community groups, led by the Wembury Local History Society, which held its annual general meeting. Chairman Peter Broughton reviewed a successful year before officers and committee members were re-elected unanimously, with only Mr. A. Romang standing down. Members also enjoyed a talk by Mr. P. Tolley titled “Sea Shells to be Found on Wembury Beach,” exploring the rich marine life of the bay. The next meeting was scheduled for 20 February, when Group Captain J.R. Goodman would speak on his research in a lecture entitled “A Thousand Years of Sherford.”
The paper also noted that St Werburgh’s Church Choir had represented Wembury in a major Devon church music festival at Exeter Cathedral the previous November, alongside nearly forty other choirs from across the county. After months of rehearsal, the performance was conducted by David Ogden and recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 2, due to air at 8:30 p.m. on 6 April 1997. The church’s AGM was also announced for Sunday 2 February at Wembury Club, Southland Park Road, open to all parishioners.
In other local news, Cedric Tarsky launched the first meeting of a junior drama group at the Village Hall, rehearsing for a new production of H.M.S. Pinafore with children aged five to sixteen. The session was set for Saturday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m.
Wembury’s vitality was as evident as ever—music, history, and youth theatre flourishing side by side, all within walking distance of the beach that continues to inspire them.
