Security

Security and Health & Safety Issues:

Security and health and safety are paramount considerations in our allotments to ensure the well-being of plot holders, visitors and the general public, to protect property, and to create a safe environment for all community members. By addressing security concerns and adhering to health and safety guidelines, allotment users can enjoy their gardening activities with peace of mind. Here are some key aspects to consider regarding security and health and safety in Wembury allotments:

Security:

Locks and Boundaries: We have a public footpath (number 25) passing through the middle of the Allotments and have no fencing or locks to prevent unauthorised access to the plots. Signage is in place to demarcate allotment areas and deter unauthorized access.

Tools and Equipment: Plot holders should secure their tools and equipment when not in use by keeping them locked in sheds or storage units. It is recommended to mark valuable items with identification marks or engraving to deter theft and aid recovery if necessary. Consider taking photographs of items that are of value to you.

Lighting: Unfortunately there is no mains electricity in the allotments and hence there is no lighting. If visiting your plot at night be sure to wear appropriate clothing and carry a torch with you. There is a solar powered lighting system in the communal shed but we cannot guarantee that this will always be working.

Vigilance: We encourage allotment holders to be vigilant and look out for any suspicious activities or individuals. Report any such activities to members of the committee. Remember that maintaining open lines of communication among plot holders can help in reporting and addressing security concerns.

"CCTV": Motion activated camera systems may be being used in and around the allotments area in order to detect and identify thieves with the aim of reporting any such to the local Police. Allotment holders are NOT being filmed on their allotments, the cameras are used in areas where there has been recent theft.

Communication: Our allotment site can feel quite isolated at times and it is suggested that plot holders carry mobile phones ( if owned ) with them for safety reasons.

Health and Safety:

No Smoking: Please do not smoke or vape in the polytunnel or the communal shed.

Pathways and Access: Maintain clear and safe pathways throughout your plot to prevent trips, falls, or other accidents. Regularly inspect and repair any uneven surfaces or potential hazards that may compromise accessibility.

Structures and Buildings: Ensure that sheds or other structures you may have on the allotment site or your plot are structurally sound and well-maintained. Regularly check for any signs of deterioration, such as rotting wood or damaged roofing, and promptly address any safety concerns. Please note that the ceiling in the communal shed is relatively low at 6 ft 4 inches. Be careful if you happen to be this tall!

Tool Safety: Use gardening tools safely and responsibly. Keep sharp tools properly stored and secured when not in use. Ensure that tools are in good working condition, with handles intact and blades properly sharpened. Proper handling and storage of tools reduces the risk of accidents or injuries.

Chemical Usage: If using chemicals, such as fertilizers, always follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Wear appropriate protective gear, such as gloves or masks, if necessary when handling chemicals. Store chemicals away safely. If using the mowers be sure to refill them with petrol after you have finished. If you are not sure how to do this please consult with the Plot Steward. Ensure any petrol is secured in the appropriate containers inside the metal shed after use.

Water Safety: Dip tanks are available on the allotment site for plot holders to use with watering cans during the Summer, if using these please report any signs of damage to the Plot Steward, the Water Steward or other committee member. Currently ( June 2023) only a number of these are working. Be mindful of water hygiene when using water for irrigation. None of the water on site is drinking water so please do not use it as such!

Fire Safety: Allotment holders should exercise caution when using open flames, such as bonfires or incinerators . Normally these should only be used between October and March. There are fire extinguishers or firefighting equipment accessible in the Communal shed in case of emergencies.

First Aid and Emergency Preparedness: We provide first aid kits and emergency contact information is displayed within the site. Plot holders should learn basic first aid procedures and know the location of exits from the allotments in case of emergencies.

Toilets: There is a chemical toilet facility between the polytunnel and the communal shed for use by plot holders only. Also pictured below are some of the large IBCs (intermediate bulk container) that form part of our main water storage system.

It is crucial for our allotment association, individual plot holders and the wider community to prioritise security measures and adhere to health and safety guidelines. By promoting a culture of vigilance, responsible practices, and open communication, Wembury allotments can continue to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for all of us to pursue our passion for gardening while fostering a strong sense of well-being.
