What is the Walworth Community Gardening Network (WCGN)?
We are a network of community gardeners who come together to share the inspiration, knowledge, and resources needed to create and sustain community gardens in Walworth, South London. Through our community gardens we meet our neighbours, improve the local area, grow and share food, increase biodiversity, and support everyone’s wellbeing.
Is the Walworth Community Gardening Network’ still active?
Yes, although in 2023 we decided to dismantle the formal organisational structure that we had built, and transition to a more informal structure. We began the process of transition, attempting to continue the best of what WCGN has to offer (such as an annual plant swap, and a Whatsapp group for knowledge exchange and practical problem solving) but without any formal legal structure or centralised administrative capacity. Despite this, the rich network of social connection and knowledge sharing between community gardeners in Walworth continues to thrive.
How can I contact Walworth Community Gardening Network?
If you are a new or existing community garden that wishes to join the network, we suggest starting by reaching out to one of your neighbouring gardens (listed below) and asking to make an in-person visit. To join the Whatsapp group please ask one of the member gardens listed.
Keep an eye-out for posters of the Walworth Plant Swap - usually mid-June. Join the Walworth Society mailing list for notifications of the plantswap and other Walworth Community events.
For gardening advice you can also contact Southwark Council's Community Gardening team who support community gardening and food growing in the borough, organise training and send a regular newsletter: communitygardening@southwark.gov.uk
