Precept 2017/18

Stow Maries Parish Council is funded by the precept, a local tax that is collected by Maldon District Council at the same time as it collects the Council tax money for Essex County Council, the Police and the Fire Service.

The Parish Council is required to set the level of its precept for each subsequent year.

The Parish Council agreed at its November 2016 Full Council meeting to set a precept of £6,455 for 2017/18, which is anticipated to cover its costs for the coming year, and only allowing for a very tight level of contingency money. Unfortunately the precept has had to be raised this time, as there is very little scope for cost reduction, being such a small parish and run on a very tight budget.

Most significant of all is that Stow Maries Parish Council has been awarded £3,000 from Essex County Council towards the cost of renewing the two notice boards in the village. The notice boards are over 20 years old and an important way to communicate with residents. In order for Stow Maries Parish Council to qualify for this award they have to contribute a small amount. Over the next 3 years £700 will come out of the precept for this.

This amounts to a 4.6% overall increase in the precept. This works out as an additional cost of £4.83per household per year, or 9p per week (based on a residence with an average Tax Band D).
