The Wombles are coming to Romford!
Romford BID are excited to announce that beloved characters Madame Cholet and Tobermory from The Wombles will be swapping Wimbledon for Romford on Saturday 14th March, making special appearances at a community clean-up event in Romford Town Centre.
The much-loved Wombles will host free meet-and-greet sessions at intervals between 10.00am and 2.30pm outside St Edward's Church in Romford Market Place, adding a touch of fun and family-friendly excitement to a morning of positive community action.
Organised by Romfoed BID in partnership with Romford Town Wombles, the event forms part of the national Keep Britain Tidy Great British Spring Clean campaign. Residents, families, and local businesses are invited to roll up their sleeves and take part in the clean-up, running from 10am to 12.30pm in Romford Market Place.
Volunteers should gather from 10am at the gazebo near St Edward’s Church for a short briefing before being divided into teams. Tasks will include litter picking, graffiti removal, and plant pot maintenance — all aimed at keeping Romford clean and green for everyone. Equipment will be provided, although participants are welcome to bring their own supplies if they prefer. As a thank you, all volunteers will receive a voucher for a free lunch roll from one of the local market traders at 12.30pm.
Julie Frost, Director of Romford BID, said: “With The Wombles appearing in Romford, this year’s Great British Spring Clean is set to be extra special. It’s a fantastic national campaign that brings communities together to take pride in where they live. Here in Romford, we’re proud to support this initiative and encourage everyone to get involved — whether by joining the clean-up, meeting The Wombles, or simply making small changes to help keep our town tidy. Events like this show what can be achieved when local people, businesses and organisations come together to make a difference.”
For those unable to attend on the day, you can still support the campaign by visiting www.keepbritaintidy.org to learn more about ongoing clean-up efforts across the UK.
