Appeal for Help

Risborough BoxFor 87 years from 1904 to 1991 this impressive signal box commanded the railway through the Chilterns, but it now needs help if it is to survive. Can we give it life once more as its builders over a century ago intended, watching over steam engines busy on the branch line as London and Birmingham expresses thunder by?

 Signal box and signals

Princes Risborough North Box was built as a splendid 125 lever brick-built building arranged over three floors, and has become the largest surviving Great Western design signal box. It has been made a Grade II listed building. Neither means it is guaranteed not to fall down or rot away! We have taken on the responsibility for looking after this imposing piece of British railway heritage, and it will be a unique showpiece for our heritage steam railway if we do it well.

Whilst we have made a start on many of the biggest restoration tasks (repairing the roof, main timber replacements, failing brickwork, new staircase…..) when you are dealing with a building that was built in 1904, it is a seemingly never ending task to halt and correct the inevitable deterioration. In this we’ve had some success, thanks in part to the generosity of our supporters in providing funding as well as a small grant from the Railway Heritage Trust. Individuals have made donations or even bequests, some companies have supplied materials free of charge.

We need to keep up that flow of funds if we are to protect and advance the box, and we continue to appeal for funds. Please can you help? If you are able to do so please use one of the email links below. If you wish to discuss an individual arrangement, such as a standing order, please email stating your wishes. You may even wish to consider us when the time comes to draw up your Will. We would also be so grateful to hear from businesses willing to offer materials or any other form of support.

Our email for enquiries about funding is:  funding@risboroughbox.org.uk

Please note all monetary donations will be securely handled by Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway Association Limited, a registered charity.

Volunteer and trainAnother way you could help bring this magnificent signal box back to its former glory is to volunteer some of your time. We will always give a warm welcome to new volunteers (and the kettle is usually on!). Basic DIY skills would be handy and if you are an expert in, say, woodwork you’ll get the red carpet treatment! You don’t even need to be able to get to the signal box to help out! If you can use a computer then your ‘behind the scenes’ help would be much appreciated too. We have a dedicated volunteer email address shown below that covers the signal box as well as all the other departments within the railway. If you prefer, come along to the railway when our passenger services are running and speak to any of the volunteers. They’ll be only too glad to help!

Our volunteer enquiry email address is: volunteersupport@chinnorrailway.co.uk
