Before the Clucas building was taken down between there and the Golden Lion there were a couple of small cottages, these were converted to retail premises before WW2, Peter Ireland ran his cycle, pram and radio business there. S.D. Ireland had the domestic appliance store in Church Street from the 1960s. After Ireland's moved the shop became Simon Stores. A miniature Woolworths and almost as good as the Gift Horse. Simon Stores moved to 16/20 Moor Street after opening at number 37 in 1971. Mr Clumpus who owned Harval's Chemist across the road owned the building.

Mr Peter Williams opened the Gift Horse Discount store in 1965 at number 37 Moor Street, next to the Golden Lion, Simon Stores moved in later. You could buy anything there pretty much, including Jane Shilton handbags at half price! They did suffer with shop lifting though, tins of salmon mainly.
